Artist statement

I have been painting for as long as I can remember.

The beauty and uniqueness of the moments of my presence in life, in this world, have always inspired me to capture them, to fix them, through drawing or painting. Painting for over thirty years has been my most powerful contact with life. It is the way I convey my essence.

I started with figurative painting, although I tried to distance myself from it through abstraction. This opened me to new and hidden meaning in abstract imagery. Today my work blurs the line between the figurative and the abstract.

Nature has always been at the centre of my inspiration, taking insight from the essence of the living. For me colours are of the utmost importance, together with the forms and structures of nature. They create new pictures in my mind's eye that I try to convey on canvas. I rely more on emotional inspiration than on a material one.

From big to small, from plentiful to the void, from the mountain to the pebble and from the trees to the cracks in the ice, everything can be a source for a pictorial form.

I feel the energy of nature, its power of transformation, its different transitory states. I don't feel the need for the quaint; I try to put energy into my compositions. This is why my main medium is oil; it is a living substance. Nature is a source of metaphorical and conceptual content in my work.
